8-time Kentucky state champions Notre Dame Academy in Northern Kentucky has announced Molly McDermott as their new head coach. McDermott was a co-captain of the 1989 team that won the Kentucky state title.

The private school, which is located in suburban Cincinnati, is one of the state’s volleyball powerhouses. Besides their 8 state titles, the school also has 12 runner-up state finishes and 33 regional championships. This year, however, they lost to St. Henry in the Regional final, snapping a streak of 6-straight regional titles.

Notre Dame finished the season 28-10 last year in what would be the last season of Buck McCoart’s 4-year tenure. She spent 6 years as the head coach at McNicholas High School in Cincinnati for the last 6 years and a varsity assistant at Oak Hills High School for 4 years. She’s also coached with the Northern Kentucky Juniors Volleyball Club.

McNicholas last year finished 18-6 in Ohio last season.

“There’s no denying that pressure and that expectation to be successful, but I feel we have all the talent we need to do that,” McDermott said in an interview with nkytribune.com. “It’s just a matter of getting together the right combinations (on the court) and getting kids to believe in themselves and have that drive to accomplish those goals.”
