WACO, Texas – No. 23 Baylor extended its win streak to six matches, taking its Big 12 opener with Texas Tech in four sets.
The Bears hit at .363 clip and managed 15 more kills than the Red Raiders in the win, while also besting TTU in aces (6-2). Both teams put up 10 blocks.
Redshirt senior outside hitter Katie Staiger led the way for Baylor with 20 kills and a team-best .415 hitting effort. Freshman outside Yossiana Pressley (15) and redshirt sophomore middle blocker Shelly Fanning (12) also chipped in double-digit tallies. Senior middle Camryn Freiberg registered a match-high seven blocks, while Pressley added four. Junior outside Aniah Philo and senior libero Jana Brusek pulled up 14 digs apiece, while Brusek served up three of the team’s six aces.
Sophomore outsides Emily Hill and Chandler Atwood paced the Red Raiders with 12 kills apiece followed by freshman middle Allison White (9). White and junior middle blocker Katy Keenan notched five blocks apiece. Redshirt senior libero Kate Klepetka registered a match-high 15 digs.
After the teams the first 14 points of the night, Baylor seized control, scoring 10 of the next 14, including three Pressley putaways and a pair of blokcs by Freiberg. Down 17-11, TTU narrowed the gap to four at 18-14 but would get no closer down the stretch. Staiger capped the stanza at 25-20.
Texas Tech battled back in Set 2, jumping out to a 4-0 lead and going on to a 16-12 advantage midway through. Five different players posted kills as the Red Raiders surged ahead. Baylor grabbed the lead at 17-16 with a 5-0 run, including a kill and an ace by Pressley. The teams tied at 17, 18 and 19, but the Bears went up 23-20 as Freiberg turned in a kill and a block. TTU rallied to take the set 25-23 with three kills, a block and an ace. The final point came on a Redding putaway.
Set 3 featured seven ties, the last at 16-all. Kills by Pressley and Staiger gave Baylor a two-point edge at 18-16, then the teams traded points over the next six points. A pair of Philo putaways made it 24-19 Bears and a Fanning kill capped the 25-20 win.
The teams were back and forth early in Set 4. After a tie at 5-all, the Bears pulled away with a 12-4 run. Five kills and a block by Staiger aided the rally. A block by Philo and Frieberg pushed the edge to 10 at 21-11. A Fanning kill put Baylor at match point at 24-15 and another ended the night two points later.

Baylor volleyball (11-3, 1-0 Big 12) surged to a four-set win over Texas Tech in the team’s Big 12 opener Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16.The Bears have now won six straight matches against the Red Raiders (11-3, 0-1 Big 12) and secured the win with five players hitting over .350.
Senior Katie Staiger led all players with 20 kills, and Yossiana Pressley added 15 on the outside while Shelly Fanning contributed 12 in the middle.
In her first Big 12 match, freshman Hannah Lockin dished 54 assists and added four kills in the win.
Baylor took control midway through the opening frame and lead 15-10 at the media timeout. Staiger closed out the first set to put the Bears in front, 25-20.
The Bears trailed 4-0 early and could never recover in the second set. After a Lockin and Fanning block gave the Bears a 21-19 lead, the Red Raiders closed out the set on a 6-2 run to even the match up, 25-23.
Baylor stormed back and hit .500 in the third frame en route to a 25-20 set win to retake the match lead.
BU used seven kills from Staiger and four blocks in the fourth set to close it out, 25-20.
