KINGSTON, Mass. – Sacred Heart High School swept Avon Tuesday afternoon to move to 8-2 on the season, but more importantly to earn head coach Rob Slavin his 500th career victory.
Getting to 500 wins has been a labor of love for Slavin, who started the Saints program in 1989, and has been with the team since with the exception of a four-year stint from 2010 to 2014. In his tenure, the Saints have recorded 19 Mayflower League titles.
“You don’t think about 500 wins when you first start,” Slavin told the Boston Globe. “I remember our first day with balls bouncing all over the place and just the thought of having a winning season was great. You never expect to be in a place that long. This is just a place that’s grown on me, and it’s been a good fit.”
The victory brought a postgame ceremony complete with a plaque, T-shirts and baloons.
With the victory and celebration in the books, Slavin and his Saints’ attention now turns back to league play.
