Turkey will look to upset another team on their way to the finals at the 2017 CEV European Women’s Championships as they take on Serbia in the semifinals.
Turkey has had quite the run at the European Championship as they started pool play with a 1-2 record after losing to Russia and Bulgaria but winning over the Ukraine. This sent them into the playoff stage of the competition, where they had to fight their way into the quarterfinals against Poland. After they took down Poland in four in the quarterfinals, the Turkish squad faced the defending European Champions Russia.
The Turkish team flew through Russia in three sets with Meryem Boz leading the squad with 23 points. Leading Turkey throughout the competition were Neriman Ozsoy with 76 points and Eda Erdem Dundar with 69.
For Serbia, they have had no trouble making their way to the semifinals of the competition after going 3-0 in pool play. Their quarterfinal match was against Belarus to which they won in straight sets. Tijana Boskovic was the leading scorer in the match with 18 points followed by Brankica Mihajlovic and Stefana Veljkovic with 12 each and Tijana Malesevic with 10. The Serbians have a strong front that makes them difficult to play against and the Turkish team will have to step up to make a true impact and down the favored Serbian crew.
