The (RV) Louisville Cardinals defeated the Boston College Eagles in four sets on Wednesday night behind a double-double by sophomore outside Melanie McHenry, who notched 16 kills and added 12 digs.
Other key contributors for the Cardinals included senior middle Tess Clark (9 kills, 4 blocks), YEAR POSITION Jasmine Bennett (7 kills) and junior libero Molly Sauer (18 digs, 5 aces).
For Boston College, two Eagles scored double-doubles of their own: outside Lynn Braakhuis (17 kills, 16 digs) and sophomore setter Jane DeJarld (34 assists, 12 digs). Sophomore Jill Strockis led the back-row defense with 20 digs.
In set one, Louisville led early and held off several runs by the home team, eventually winning 25-20 on a McHenry kill. The second frame stayed close as well, but the Cardinals separated late to win 25-21 on a Tess Clark kill.
After the intermission, Boston College started the set with an 11-1 run then held off the visitors to win 25-23. Set four was tied at 12, but Louisville built a lead and won 25-20 on McHenry’s 16th kill of the match.
Next up, Louisville travels to Syracuse for its regular season finale on Friday, while the Eagles host Notre Dame, also on Friday.

Volleyball Beats Boston College 3-1
Cards are 17-2 in ACC
Outside hitter Melanie McHenry had 16 kills, 12 digs and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 win at Boston College in ACC volleyball action Wednesday evening in Power Gym in Boston.
UofL moves to 23-6 and 17-2 in the ACC. A win at Syracuse on Friday will clinch a share of the ACC crown for the Cardinals, who were picked eighth in the preseason poll. The Cards hit .168 with 50 kills, 12 blocks and seven aces. Molly Sauer had a career high five aces and added 18 digs. Tess Clark had nine kills and four blocks and Jasmine Bennett added seven kills, hitting .353. Boston College drops to 7-22 and 4-15 in the league. The Eagles were led by Lynn Braakhuis’ 17 kills and 16 digs.
UofL ran out to a 8-3 lead early in the first set and then withstood three 3-0 runs by the Eagles before scoring four of the final five points of the set for the 25-20 win. Tess Clark led with four kills on five swings and no errors. UofL hit. 242 as a team and added three blocks.
In the second set, UofL popped out to a 5-1 lead early but the Eagles made a push and took their first lead of the match at 7-6. The teams traded points until a kill by Melanie McHenry and a Maggie DeJong block put the Cards up two at 14-12. Boston College countered again and tied at 14 and sparked a Cardinal timeout. UofL ran off four straight and seemed in control when BC called timeout down 20-15. Molly Sauer dropped an ace off the tape to take the Cardinals to 23-18 and a BC service error gave UofL set point at 24-17. BC staved off the UofL win four straight points before falling 25-21.
In the third set Louisville fell behind 13-2 and used a 13 point serving run by Molly Sauer to tie at 20. The teams traded points but the Cards’ comeback fell just short as BC won 25-23. Melanie McHenry had six kills and Maggie DeJong had three blocks and two kills in the third stanza.
In the fourth set, UofL lead 12-4 but let Boston string together an 8-0 run to tie at 12. UofL answered with a 5-1 run of its own to lead 17-13 and then held off Boston College’s late rally to win 25-20.
UofL heads to Syracuse for the regular season finale and a shot at the ACC crown when they face the Orange at 1 p.m.

Forced Fourth Set Fails Eagles
DeJarld and Braakhuis record double-doubles on the match.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Sophomore Jane DeJarld and graduate Lynn Braakhuis both produced double-doubles as Boston College volleyball fell to Louisville in four sets, 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, Wednesday night in Chestnut Hill.
Despite two close sets, Louisville came out with the match advantage heading into the third frame. The Eagles found their fight and kicked the third off with an 11-1 run that contributed to forcing a fourth set, in which they fell in a close 25-20.
Braakhuis had match-high 17 kills, adding 12 digs to secure a double-double, while DeJarld led BC with 34 assists, also registering 12 digs for the second double-double. Sophomore Jill Strockis led the match with 20 digs, while senior Sol Calvete was one dig away from being the fourth Eagle with double digit digs.
Melanie McHenry paced the Cardinals with 16 kills, hitting a double-double herself with 12 digs. Wilma Rivera had match-high assists with 37 and Molly Sauer held team-high 18 digs.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
– DeJarld registered her 11th double-double of the season with 34 assists and 12 digs, and Braakhuis recorded her seventh double-double with 17 kills and 16 digs.
– Braakhuis led the match with 17 kills, tying her season high. During the first frame, she registered five kills, 11 total attempts and no errors for a .455 hitting percentage.
– Strockis’ 20 digs led the match.
– Sophomore Sophie West hit .333 on the night, notching 6 kills off 15 total attempts with only one error.
– BC produced 52 kills to Louisville’s 50, and 79 digs to Louisville’s 76.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
The Cardinals accumulated an early 7-1 run to take the lead, then at 14-12, they had another run – 5-2 this time – to lead the Eagles 18-14. They ended the set on another 5-2 run, taking the first frame 25-20.
SET 2
Though the teams began the set evenly matched, at 16-14 Louisville hit a 5-1 run to boost their lead to 20-15. A kill from Braakhuis and two attack errors held the Cardinals to match point for three rallies, but they eventually took a second-set win, 25-21.
SET 3
Stealing an 11-1 run, the Eagles started the third set off with a bang. This run included a kill from freshman Clare Naughton, four kills from Braakhuis, a service ace from junior McKenna Goss, two kills by freshman Amaka Chukwujekwu and a solo block from DeJarld. The squads then traded points until Louisville hit their own long run, 12-0, tying the match at 20-all. A kill from Goss and two from sophomore Cat Balido secured a BC third-set victory, 25-23.
SET 4
A 6-1 run got the Cardinals off on the right start, bringing their lead to 8-3. Kills from Chukwujekwu, DeJarld and Balido contributed to an 8-1 run to tie the set at 12-all. After Louisville reached 20 points first, BC could not reciprocate and fell 25-20.
