Current World Champion Evandro Gonçalves and his partner Andre Loyola recently swept Olympic gold medalists Bruno Schmidt and Alison Cerutti in their championship match at Brazil’s national tour stop at João Pessoa. He then traveled to participate at the Fort Lauderdale Major stop of the 2018 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, where despite putting on a very decent effort, was ultimately knocked out by at his round of 24 match. All the while, Evandro’s mother, was undergoing treatment for a tumor in her head.
Those who follow Evandro on Instagram can imagine how tough the situation must be for him. His posts on social media are always filled with loving messages for his mom and family. Here is what he had to say to FIVB about the matter:
“She told me to go to play and it was good because we went to João Pessoa and we won, and my team was awesome giving me support and everything. It was really intense because I actually wanted to be with her during that time and it was cool that I went there and won and was able to give her some happy moments. But even now, my head is 50 percent here and 50 percent there. Hopefully I can get back home and make her happy again. She’s getting a lot better, she’s supposed to be sent home soon. Thank God that’s happening and hopefully when I get back, I can see her at home already.”
Evandro, who is only 27 years of age and the youngest beach volleyball world champion ever, is showing resolve and maturity beyond his years in this difficult moment of his life and career. We wish his mom a quick recovery.
