Baylor posted its second win of the season Saturday morning as the Bears faced Texas State at its home Hampton Inn & Suites Waco North Invitational, but it wasn’t just a garden variety victory, it marked the 400th win of head coach Ryan McGuyre’s career.
The win moved McGuyre to 400-165 all-time as a collegiate women’s head coach including stints at Biola and Cal Baptist.
McGuyre, who took over the Baylor program in 2015 and has led the Bears to back to back 20-win seasons and back-to-back NCAA berths, was head coach at Biola from 1999 to 2001 and was head men’s and women’s coach at Cal Baptist from 2002 to 2011. His Cal Baptist teams won six NAIA men’s national championships (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011) and his women’s teams collected three women’s national titles (2004, 2005, 2011).
The reigning Big 12 Coach of the Year, McGuyre’s teams have posted 17 20-win seasons, including a 22-12 effort at Baylor in 2016 and a 24-7 season a year ago.
Since his arrival in Waco, Baylor has moved up the Big 12 ranks, finishing tied for fourth in 2016 and second in 2017. His charges have earned four AVCA All-America honors, six all-region nods and 11 All-Big 12 selections.
Baylor kicked off the 2018 campaign with a 25-19, 13-25, 25-15, 25-21 win over LSU in front of a Ferrell Center record crowd of 3,858 on Friday night. The Bears were picked to finish second in the Big 12 preseason poll.
