Pressley Posts Two 20-Kill Efforts as Baylor Wins Tourney Title

Baylor finished off a 3-0 weekend at home with a pair of wins on Saturday at the Hampton Inn & Suites Waco North Invitational. The Bears swept Texas State for head coach Ryan McGuyre’s 400th career victory as a women’s head coach, and then followed it with a four-set win over Marquette.

Yossiana Pressley notched a pair of 20-kill outings on Saturday to sew up tournament MVP honors.

Baylor def. Texas State 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-17)

Key Stats: The Bears outdid the Bobcats in kills (47-40), hitting percentage (.312 to .209), digs (44-43) and aces (4-2). Texas State outblocked Baylor 6-5. Baylor hit at a match-high .355 clip in a dominant Set 3 win.

Stat Leaders: Pressley started the day with 20 kills on a .421 hitting effort to go with 10 digs and a team-high two aces. Shelly Fanning followed with 11 kills, a team-best .450 hitting effort and four blocks.

Janell Fitzgerald (8), Tyeranee Scott (7), Sarbi Worsley-Gilbert (7) and Megan Porter (7) provided the offense for Texas State. Porter served up the team’s two aces, while Cheyenne Huskey and Jillian Slaughter put up three blocks apiece.

It Was Over When: After six ties, the last at 8-all, the Bears slowly took control a few points at a time, eventually leading 19-14 after four Pressley putaways and four Bobcat miscues. Baylor then wrapped up the sweep with a final 6-2 push, winning it on a service error on their second match-point try.

 

Marquette def. LSU 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-14)

Key Stats: A .458 effort in Set 3 and nine total aces lifted Marquette past LSU on Saturday morning. In addition to outserving the Tigers 9-3, the Golden Eagles outdid their foes in hitting (.320 to .245), kills (41-40) and digs (47-45). LSU won the block 5-2.

Stat Leaders: Jenna Rosenthal notched 12 kills on 23 errorless swings for a match-high .522 hitting effort. Allie Barbie added 11 kills at a .385 clip. Anna Haak notched 10 digs and seven kills, while setter Sarah Rose registered a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs.

Taylor Bannister was the top hitter of the match with 14 kills, while hitting .407. Four other players managed at least five putaways: Olivia Beyer (6), Toni Rodriguez (6), Whitney Foreman (6) and Jacqui Armer (5). Armer and Foreman put up three blocks apiece.

It Was Over When: Marquette ran away with set 3 with a 12-2 run, turning a 6-all tie into a 16-8 advantage. Two kills each by Haak and Mosher highlighted the rally. LSU would get no closer than six the rest of the way, last at 19-13. The Golden Eagles managed six of the final seven points in a 25-14 win. Hope Werch started things off with a kill and an ace. A Rosenthal putaway and a Tiger hitting error ended the contest.

 

LSU def. Texas State 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-18)

Key Stats: The Tigers dominated the net on both sides of the ball, boasting a 45-32 lead in kills and a 12-3 advantage in blocks. LSU also won the hitting efficiency battle .254 to .129. Texas State served up five aces, while allowing just two. LSU capped the match with a .367 hitting effort in Set 3, while limiting the Bobcats to a .121 clip.

Stat Leaders: Taylor Bannister (13) and Olivia Beyer (10) paced the LSU offense. Beyer also was one of three Tigers with six blocks to her credit, alongside Jacqui Armer and Lindsay Flory. Flory also chipped in six kills at a team-best .625 clip.

Amy Pflughaupt was the top hitter for Texas State with nine kills and an ace. Sarbi Worsley-Gilbert tacked on seven putaways and two blocks, while Janell Fitzgerald and Cheyenne Huskey added five kills apiece. Huskey also served up a team-leading three aces.

It Was Over When: LSU began to pull away after the seventh tie of Set 3 at 7-all. The Tigers soon boasted a five-point edge at 15-10. Five kills, a block and two hitting errors gave LSU a lead it would not relinquish. Texas State was within two at 17-15, but the Tigers closed out the match on an 8-3 run. Bannister tallied the last three kills to cap the 25-18 win.

 

Baylor def. Marquette 3-1 (33-31, 25-27, 25-17, 25-22)

Key Stats: Baylor hit .318 and put up 10 blocks, while holding Marquette to a .222 clip for the match in a four-set win to claim the tournament title. The Golden Eagles edged the Bears in kills (65-63), aces (8-6) and digs (74-68). Baylor hit .316 or better in all but Set 3, when the team managed just a .257 efficiency.

Stat Leaders: Yossiana Pressley chalked up her second straight double-double with 20 kills and 10 digs to go with a match-high three aces for Baylor. Shelly Fanning (15) and Aniah Philo (15) followed. Philo rounded out a double-double with 14 digs and four blocks, while Fanning hit at a team-best .538 clip and put up five stuffs alongside Sydney Sacra. Tara Wulf managed a team-high 20 digs.

Allie Barber led the way for Marquette with 19 kills on a .348 hitting effort. Anna Haak (16) and Jenna Rosenthal (10) also posted double-digit kill tallies. Haak finished off a double-double with 16 digs ,while Rosenthal put up a team-best four blocks and two aces. Setter Sarah Rose served up four aces to go with her 27 assists and four digs.

It Was Over When: After 11 ties, the last at 17, Baylor broke away for good with a 7-1 run. Four Marquette miscues fueled the rally, while Gia Milana, Philo and Pressley each added a putaway. Facing match point, the Golden Eagles came through with four straight points to keep the match going. A Bear miscue, a kill and a block by Madeline Mosher and a Rose ace, made up the run. In the end, though, Pressley sealed the win at 25-22.
