Bulgarian Volleyball Federation Vice President Lubo Ganev has told Sportal.bg that the institution has begun the produces to issue RobertLandy Simon Bulgarian citizenship so he can represent the country in the future:
“We have all the necessary papers needed for Simon’s naturalization. Now we’re waiting. Once his documents have been issued, we will communicate with the Cuban Volleyball Federation and respect the 2-year grace period during which Simon will have to wait to play for Bulgaria, according to the rules of the International Volleyball Federation.”
If the deal indeed comes through, Bulgaria will have at its disposal one of the current generation’s most dominating players. The 6’10” 31-year-old Cuban phenom has dazzled fans from a young age, as he plays at both the middle-blocker and opposite hitter positions, with an attack reach close to 13″. Currently one of the world’s best paid players, Simon was first called to serve the Cuban national team at only 17 years of age, and captained it from 2005 to 2010, winning numerous accolades and titles in that time span.
Since defecting from his home country, Simon played in Italy, Qatar, Korea, Brazil and is currently a player for the Italian powerhouse Lube Civitanova, with fellow Cuban national Yoandy Leal. At Lube, he is also teammates with Bulgarian superstar Tsvetan Sokolov. Although Bulgaria disappointed its fans at this year’s WCH, the team would have a whole different look once Simon joins it and Sokolov and Georgi Bratoev comes back from injury, making it instantly one of the best in the world. If Matey Kazisky changes his mind and unretires from the team, then, it would be a true powerhouse.
