Olympic Champions Take Down Brazil In Semifinal Match

2016 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD TOUR FINALS

GERMAN/BRAZILIAN SEMIFINAL MATCH

Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst (Germany) swept Brazilian powerhouse duo Larissa Maestrini and Talita Antunes 21-19, 21-19 in a 38 minute match.

The first set started off a back and forth marathon, tying four separate times before it reached 6-6 and the German’s pulled away to take a small 9-6 lead over Brazil. That didn’t stop the Brazilian pair from fighting back, trailing a majority of the match, a 3-0 run late tied the set at 19 all. A Ludwig kill and service ace ended the set 21-19.

The second set was a dead heated battle, trading points, with Brazil staying on top until 6-4, when Walkenhorst put down a pokey and a service ace, swinging the momentum in their favor. Still a back and forth set, until 13-13, two Ludwig kills and two Walkenhorst aces put the duo ahead 17-13. Brazil fought back late with a 3-0 run to make it a 19-18 game, but the German’s were determined to win and took the set and match 21-19.

The German pair advances to the finals with the win, facing Swiss duo Heidrich/Zumkehr on Sunday morning at 11:15am on Court 1.

Brazil will conclude play at the tournament later this afternoon, facing Swiss pair Forrer/Verge-Depre for third place on Court 1 at 1:45pm.
