The USC Trojans have won their second-straight Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships, but the title didn’t come unblemished.
In the semi-finals of the winners’ side of the bracket, UCLA handed USC a 3-2 defeat, winning the 3, 4, and 5 lines to give USC their first loss in their last 62 matches.
But USC dropped down to the losers bracket and knocked off Washington 5-0 to get another shot at UCLA in the Pac-12 championship match. Unlike some conferences, where a team out of the loser’s bracket has to win twice to claim the title, the Pac-12 has one winner-take-all matchup at the finish.
USC were able to flip the script in that one matchup and beat UCLA 3-2 in the final.
The Trojans’ All-American #1s Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes had no problem in either matchup against UCLA’s top pair Nicole McNamara and Megan McNamara. In the semi-final, the USC pair won 2-0 (21-11, 21-19), and in the final they won 2-0 again (21-8, 21-16).
What flipped the match was USC’s #3s Terese Cannon and Nicolette Martin, who lost their first matchup against Elise Zappia and Torrey van Winden in a 2-0 sweep, but then won the 2nd matchup by the same 2-0 margin. Only 1 match (the 5 line in the championship) went to 3 sets.
A sub-plot of the final day of the competition was a deep run by the 7-seed Washington. They lost to UCLA in the opening round of the tournament, but beat #9 Oregon (5-0); #6 Cal (5-0); #4 Arizona State (3-2), and #3 Arizona (4-10 to fight their way back to the last round of the loser’s bracket.
They lost to Arizona 3-2 earlier this month during the regular season, and Cal 4-1 a week after that.
