Canada, Cuba Outblock Foes, Will Play Sunday for 5th Place

Cuba 3, Columbia 1 (25-15, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21)

Canada 3, Argentina 1 (28-26, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19)

 

Canada and Cuba will meet Sunday afternoon with fifth place in the Pan Am Cup on the line after both teams won in classification matches on Saturday.

The Canadians topped Argentina in four sets, while Cuba moved past Columbia in four sets.

The match losers will play Sunday for seventh place.

 

Cuba 3, Columbia 1

Cuba blocked its way to a four-set win over Columbia and into the fifth-place match on Saturday. Cuba put up 15 blocks in the match, outblocking their foes 15-10, and had help from 28 Columbian miscues in the contest.

Columbia won the offensive battle by one (48-47 in kills) and outserved Cuba 6-3, but could not overcome the blocking difference or its own mistakes.

Heidy Casanova Alvarez led the Cubans with 20 points, including 17 kills and three blocks. Three other players added double-digit point tallies: Daymara Lescay Cajigal (12), Regla Rainierys Gracia Gonzalez (11) and Laura Beatriz Suarez Hernandez (11). Hernandez managed 10 kills, while Lescay added five blocks.

Dayana Segovia tallied a match-high 23 points, with 17 kills, four blocks and two aces to pace Columbia. Giselle Perez added 14 points, with 12 kills and two aces. Valerin Carabali served up a team-leading three aces.

 

Canada 3, Argentina 1

After just missing out on the quarterfinals, Canada has rallied to earn a shot at fifth place in the standings with a pair of victories. On Saturday, the Canadians topped Argentina to stay in the race.

Jennifer Cross put up seven blocks, leading the team to a match-leading 13 stuffs in the win.

Shainah Joseph led all scorers with 25 points for Canada, all on kills, while Cross (13), Michaela Reesor (13), Kyla Richey (12) and Lucille Charuk (11) also chipped in double-digit point efforts.

Lucia Fresco tallied 21 points to lead Argentina, while Sol Piccolo (15) and Elina Rodriguez (12) followed.
