Heidy Casanova Alvarez registered a Pan American Cup record 41 points in leading Cuba to fifth place at the Pan American Cup on Sunday.
Casanova tallied 38 kills and three blocks to break the previous record of 37 points set by the Dominican Republic’s Sidarka Nunez on May 5, 2008, vs. the United States.
Canada outblocked Cuba 10-6, but could not overcome the Cubans’ 65-46 advantage in kills. Each team served up six aces.
Regla Gracia Gonzalez (15) and Daymara Lescay Cajigal (14) also scored in double figures for the Cubans. Lescay downed 11 kills and added two blocks and an ace, while Gonzalez managed four blocks.
Shainah Joseph tallied 25 points for Canada, with 23 puaways, while Mikaela Reesor chipped in 12 points, including nine kills and two aces. Lucille Charuk added four blocks, while Jennifer Cross managed three blocks and an ace.
