The Brazilian contingent at the Xiamen 3-Star event was cut in half and the United States kept its lone representative in play during Round of 16 action Saturday.
The American duo of Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar defeated Riikka Lehtonen and Anniina Parkkinen of Finland 2-0 (21-12, 21-15) in one of just two straight-set matches on the day.
Brazil’s Maria Antonelli and Carol Horta defeated countrymen Josi Alves and Lili Maestrini 2-1 in a very tight match (23-25, 23-21, 15-11), while Barbara Seixas de Freitas and Fernanda Alves defeated Olga Motrich and Nadezda Makroguzova of Russia 21-23, 21-13, 15-7. Brazilians Juliana Felisberta Da Silva and Carol Solberg Salgado, however, fell to Austria’s Stefanie Schwaiger and Katharina Schutzenhofer in three sets (22-20, 12-21, 15-12).
Seven countries will be represented in the final eight. Brazil boasts two quarterfinalists. Quarterfinal action is slated to begin at 2 a.m. ET Saturday.
