Bulgarian middle blocker Ivaylo Velikov has allegedly been tested positive for a doping violation, according to Lavenir.net. Upon receiving the news, VBC Waremme, the Belgium club for which Velikov was signed to, issued a statement releasing the player:

“Ivaylo has taken a substance that he should not have used. We have a very strict medical staff, but Velikov also consulted with Bulgarian doctors who have prescribed him medicine that is banned in Belgium. He is a good guy and he used it unintentionally, but the club decided to part with him and Ivaylo returned to Bulgaria on Monday.  Shaken by this news, the group will have to compose itself without its middle blocker. It will not be easy, but we will have to work with what we have. In any case, everyone took a huge morale shot with this announcement.’

In his defense, Velikov vehemently denied the allegations, according to sportal.bg:

“I have not taken banned substances, I will appeal. An investigation is currently underway, I have already contacted the company from which I buy food supplements, and they assured me that the products I use are not forbidden and will cooperate fully.”

The 29-year-old 6’9″ opposite hitter was experiencing his first season abroad after a successful domestic career in Bulgaria.
