Former Saint Mary’s Gael Morgan Hughes is transferring to the Boise State women’s volleyball program for 2018. A senior-to-be in the fall, Hughes will be immediately eligible for her final season of action indoors.

Hughes played middle blocker for Saint Mary’s but was also listed as an outside hitter on their roster in her lone season with the Gaels. She went on to lead the team in hitting percentage at .320, which was also seventh in the West Coast Conference, and notched 227 kills (2.29 per set), 98 blocks (0.99 per set), 65 digs (0.66 per set) and 22 aces (0.22 per set). She reached the double-digit kill plateau eight times with a career-high of 23 coming against Gonzaga in November.

A 5’10” native of Willows, California, Hughes came to Saint Mary’s after two years at Feather River College in the Junior College level. In 2016 she was the Golden Valley Conference MVP and earned All-State in California for the second consecutive year. Before that, Hughes prepped at Willows High School.

Additionally, Hughes spent time with beach teams at both Feather River College and Saint Mary’s. With the former, she helped the team to a undefeated 2017 mark and a number one ranking in the CCCAA. She will have one year to play in the sand as well with a Boise State program that began in 2014 and went 3-11 in the spring of 2018 season.

Indoors, Boise State finished the 2017 season at 17-14 overall and 10-8 as a member of the Mountain West Conference. They are on pace to have three returning middle blockers and seven outside hitters to join Hughes at the positions.
