2017 CEV EUROPEAN WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

After the team’s opening 3-0 sweep of the Czech Republic, Serbian star Brankica Mihajlovic spoke on the team’s expectations for the tournament, among other subjects.

“Already tomorrow we have another match against Netherlands, and we’re hoping really that we can play even better and improve our game,” Mihajlovic said. “It’s too early to speak about (expectations for the tournament). I think Serbian national team is always going for the highest ranking. Two years ago we won the bronze medal, and I would be happy to make one step more, better, but you know, it’s too early. There are too many good games to play. We’re just hoping that we can play better from game to game to game.”

While her team dominated, Mihaljovic struggled in the opener. She landed just 22% of her shots with 5 kills, 3 errors, and 4 shots being blocked. She had 1 block and 1 aces of her own, but that came with 4 service errors.

Mihajlovic also applauded the crowd in Goygol, Azerbaijan, the Black Sea country’s second-largest city. While the official capacity of the building is just 900, with temporary seating there were more than double that (2,000 fans) packed into the hall for the opening day’s games in Pool D. The crowds have continued into Day 2, with another sellout stand for the Czechs’ 3-1 win over Belgium in the early game. Serbia and Netherlands kick off at 20:00 (8:00 PM) Azerbaijani time on Saturday. No live streams are available.
