Croatian soccer star Ivan Perisic, who plays professionally for Inter Milan, tested the waters as a professional beach volleyball player at the FIVB World Tour event in Porec last week, and found himself facing a major fine from his club.
Meanwhile, across the world, Brazilian soccer superstars Dani Alvez and Neymar tested their volleyball skills on a local beach as part of an extended vacation time with no fines on the table.
Besides the location of the beach action, professional tournament vs. vacation, one major difference is that Perisic is on the transfer market and could earn his club between 40 and 50 million euros on the open market. An injury could cost his club tens of millions of dollars.
Alvez, a defender, recently separated from his club, Juventus, which won the Italian Serie A title in 2017. He is rumored to be heading to Manchester City in the English Premier League and may have a verbal agreement in place with the team, but for now, he is a free agent and free to enjoy other sports on his break.
Alves and Neymar, both play on the Brazilian national team, and were previously teammates for FC Barcelona in La Liga in Spain.
The pair were among a number of celebrities in attendance at the wedding of fellow soccer star Lionel Messi on July 1 in Argentina.
