Although France can still usurp the United States for the Pool K1 victory, its the United States who have secured a spot among the three into the semifinals. That leaves one opening between France and Serbia for that last spot in the FIVB World League Group 1 final four.
France won its first and only match thus far in the pool in five sets over the United States. They sit at 1-0 with two points. Serbia, on the other hand, lost in four sets to the U.S., as they have zero points to pair with an 0-1 record. USA is sitting in the clubhouse awaiting who will join them from Pool K1 in the semifinals as they finished 1-1 with four points.
The tiebreakers go as follow: wins, points, set ratio, points ratio. So for France, if they simply record a win over Serbia of any kind, they’ll have two wins. That would push France to the pool victory as they would take on second place from Pool J1 while the U.S. would have to face the top team from the other pool. France can secure a spot in the semifinal with a 3-2 loss as well. That would create a three-way tie in terms of wins, but going five would tack on another point for France to give them three – the U.S. would have four and Serbia two in this scenario. The only thing this would change is USA would win the pool (and play number two from Pool J1) while France would finish second (and face number one from Pool J1 in the semifinal).
Serbia’s path is a bit more clear. They have to win in three or four sets – anything else will not push them to the final four. If they can accomplish that, it’d cause all three teams in Pool K1 to finish 1-1, but would give Serbia three points to France’s two. This would also put the U.S. atop the pool with four points.
