Week 3 begins with some top ten clashes in Cuiaba, Brazil. Pool I1 consists of Brazil, Belgium, Netherlands and USA. The USA, Brazil and Netherlands are all in the world top-10 with Belgium just outside at #16. All four of these teams feature some young up and coming stars and have shown their inexperience over the span of the tournament thus far. This week will be a test of that youth as they vie for one of the final spots to keep their championship hopes alive.

The USA broke their undefeated streak last week with a loss against Italy, but finished the week with a strong showing against host nation, China. Kelly Murphy, Madison Kingdon and Michelle Bartsch-Hackley all tallied over 20 points each in the five setter.

After an initial stumble losing to Japan in the first week, the Netherlands are getting stronger with each match. They haven’t yet faced the same level of competition as the other three teams in this pool, but have had success with only one loss to Japan and most recently a statement win against Russia 3-0 in Kalingrad, Russia.

Brazil has had a rocky tournament so far. They’ve chalked up losses to Serbia and in this past week, Japan and Thailand. The first match of the week features a rematch between Belgium and Brazil. Brazil came out the victor in that prior showdown with a 3-0 sweep.

Belgium has struggled this tournament as they come in to this week winless. The Belgians have shown flashes of brilliance when they took a set off of Turkey in the first week and went five sets with the Dominican Republic to end last week.
