Brazil Wins Fifth Straight, Tops Cuba 3-1 for Pan Am Cup Gold

Brazil edged Cuba 3-1 in the U21 Pan American Cup finals Sunday night to bring home the gold medal. The medal comes in addition to the South American spot in the U21 World Championships, which the team earned earlier in the week.

The Brazilians were outblocked 8-6 and outserved 8-6, but forced 29 errors in the 25-23, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18 win.

Four Brazilian players posted double-digit point totals, and they were led by Victor Cardoso’s 16. Cardoso put down 14 kills and added two aces, while Daniel Mascarenhas, Henrique Honorato and Davy Moraes added 10 points apiece. Moraes and Mascarenhas put down nine kills and a block apiece, while Honorato chipped in six kills, three aces and a block. Gabriel Bertolini put up three blocks and six kills.

Miguel Lopez and Miguel Gutierrez paced the Cuban attack with 22 and 20 points respectively. Lopez posted 15 kills and served up seven aces, while Guitierrez accounted for 17 kills, two blocks and an ace. Javier Concepcion added 11 points with eight kills and a team-best three blocks.
