Canada secured the bronze medal at the Pan American Cup with a win over Guatemala Sunday, but must wait and see if a FIVB U21 World Championships wild card berth is store for them.
Canada downed Guatemala 25-15, 25-17, 25-19 with help from 13 blocks and seven aces to earn the bronze medal. Canada dominated the stat sheet, outblocking Guatemala 13-3, serving up seven aces, while allowing just three, and pounding down 40 kills to just 24.
Sharone Vernon-Evans racked up a match-high 17 points for Volleyball Canada, while Eric Loeppky chipped in 12. Vernon-Evans tallied 15 kills and added two blocks. Loeppky chipped in nine kills and three aces, while Jesse Elser accounted for 10 points with eight kills and two blocks. Matthew Mawdsley added eight points, including a team-best four blocks.
“We are happy, as you saw I think our players were very, very tired. It has been a long week for us – six matches in six days, which is very demanding,” Canadian head coach Gino Brousseau said. “Today, we just managed the game and I didn’t ask for a big performance. Now we will wait to see if we have qualified for the Worlds.”
Meanwhile, Edras Pineda scored nine points, with seven kills and a team-best two blocks, for Guatemala. Wagner Chacon, who has led the team throughout the tournament, was held to just seven points, with six kills and an ace.
“We knew what the result would be, and we’re very happy to have the opportunity to compete at this Pan Am Cup and finish fourth,” Guatemalan coach Reider Lucas said. “I think we played better than Tuesday when we first faced Canada, we’re still making errors that we need to fix. My guys improved and it has been a very good experience for them, we really enjoyed it.”
