Amidst the soccer world cup craze, Brazilians celebrated National Volleyball Day this Thursday, June 27. Some of the sport’s Olympic stars took to their personal Instagram pages to celebrate the date:
“Today we celebrate the sport that I love so much, which game me conquests, discipline, respect, and taught me to love my country even more.” – Two-time Olympic gold medalist Fabiana Claudino
“Today we celebrate National Volleyball Day. I am thankful for this sport that I love and that allowed me so much learning, values, frienships, and so much happyness.” – Olympic gold medalist Fernanda Garay
“National Volleyball Day! This is the sport I most love in the world!” – Two-time Olympic gold medalist Sheilla Castro
“I am so thankful for this sport. Volleyball is my whole life!” – Olympic gold medalist Tandara Caixeta
It makes sense that Brazil has a National Volleyball Day, as the sport only loses in popularity in the country to soccer, and is the most practiced sport by women. It is also one of Brazil’s most decorated Olympic modalities, totaling 10 Olympic medals, five of them gold: three men’s gold, three men’s silver, two women’s gold, and two women’s bronze. Its domestic league is also one of the most competitive in the world.
