Brazilian star Thaisa Daher injured her ankle on Tuesday evening in a Champions League game, but doctors have said its just a dislocation, not a break. This comes as a relief after the severity of the injury indicated that it could be much worse.
Dalher, a middle blocker for Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul, one of the top club teams in the world with 28 Turkish League titles and FIVB Club World Championships in 2015 and 2016, injured her ankle while attempting a block in the team’s game against Fenerbahce SK Istanbul. She stepped on the ankle of an opponent, Dutch player Maret Balkestein-Grothues, across the net.

She was immediately taken to a hospital where doctors put her under anesthesia in operating conditions to put her ankle back into place. They kept her overnight and performed an MRI on Wednesday morning, but did not detect a break that would have required a much longer period of rehabilitation.
Her team won the game, which advanced them to the Champions League final 4 that will be played later this month in Italy.
In a release by the club, captain Neslihan Demir Guler said that the team’s win was bitter-sweet. “We are all shocked. The experience of such an event during the match made us all sad. After Thaisa lrgy, we played the sets for her. We give her a gift. I hope to get back to her old health as soon as possible.”
Below, see a video of the incident – which was so severe that her opponents and teammates alike could be seen cringing, crying, and looking away as an immediate reaction. Her foot was bent at almost a 90 degree inward. World of Volley has screen-captures of the gruesome injury.
