2017 FIVB WORLD BEACH TOUR – RIO DE JANIERO

Agatha/Duda (Brazil) def. Pavan/Humana-Paredes 2-1 (21-14, 13-21, 15-13) for Gold Medal

Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda Santos Lisboa, better known as Agatha/Duda, thrilled the home crowd on Sunday in the women’s gold medal match of the 2017 Rio Open. They defeated Canadian pair Sarah Pavan/Melissa Humana-Paredes  2-1 (21-14, 13-21, 15-13) in the final, which marks Barbara’s 5th FIVB in a 12-year career and Duda’s 3rd in just 17 starts.

“I am excited for our team as our expectations are high for each event,” Barbara said. “Duda is an amazing talent and our partnership continues to improve with each match. She is only 18 and the sky is the limit for her.  So far, so good.  Each event is different, so the key is playing consistently well with very few mistakes.”

The final was made up of two pairs who are still getting used to playing with each other – both sets of finalists are new pairings since the 2016 Olympic Games.

All 3 of Duda’s career World Tour wins have come in her home country of Brazil.

Barbara/Duda will divide $20,000 for their first-place finish, a share of the overall $300,000 given out in Rio; while Pavan and Humana-Paredes will share $16,000.

Hermannova/Slukova (CZE) def. Fernanda/Seixas (Brazil) 2-0 (23-21, 21-18) for Bronze Medal

History was made in the bronze medal match, , when the Czech pair of Barbora Hermannova and Marketa Slukova became the first Czech pair, male or female, to ever make a podium at an FIVB World Tour event in the volleyball mecca of Brazil. And to do so, they had to beat a home-court advantage held by Fernanda Alves and Barbara Seixas.

That win earned them $10,000 and their second-ever World Tour win – the last one coming in October of 2015 in Turkey.

The World Tour will take a weekend off before heading to Moscow for a 3-star tournament from May 31-June 4.
