Brazil’s Carolina Salgado and Maria Antonelli made it through two rounds of qualification to end up as the winners of the FIVB World Tour event in The Hague. The pair becomes just the second in the history of the World Tour to make it through two qualification matches and win the gold medal in the main draw.
The Hague was a three-star event in the FIVB‘s new star ranking system of their events, meaning that the payout for the tournament comes from a $150,000 purse prize. The Brazilian pair will take home $10,000 to split from the purse.

The match took 39 minutes to complete, for the Brazilian pair to take down the Swiss. The 15th seeded squad finished The Hague with a perfect 9-0 record, not losing a single match on their way to victory. Their run to the victory began with two country quota matches on Tuesday, followed by a successful qualification round on Wednesday. Thursday featured two pool play matches, while the elimination process began on Friday, running throughout the weekend.
April Ross and Jen Kessy are the only other squad in the history of the FIVB to start an event in the country quota and win the whole thing. The difference here is that Salgado/Antonelli didn’t drop a match, while Ross/Kessy lost two matches on their way to gold.
The Hague is just the third time in Salgado’s career that she has topped the podium of an FIVB event, with the last coming in 2013 and the prior in 2008, both with her sister Maria Clara. Beach volleyball has been a long-standing tradition for the Salgado family, as there has been a total of 17 FIVB tournament gold medals won within their family name. Salgado’s brother Pedro who is an active player, winning the Fort Lauderdale tournament to kick off the 2017 season, having won 17 golds in his career, while their mother won one gold.
