Butler’s Whitney Beck Garners Big East Offensive Player Of The Week

BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Whitney Beck, Butler, RS-Jr., OH (Albion, Ill.)

Named the Tournament MVP of the Golden Flashes Classic, Butler redshirt junior outside hitter Whitney Beck averaged a league-best 6.42 points and 5.17 kills per set with 4.0 digs per set and four aces as she posted a pair of double-double performances in wins over College of Charleston and Kent State. Beck recorded 14 kills, 13 digs, four blocks and two service aces on Friday against host Kent State and followed that effort with 17 kills, 11 digs and two service aces in the win over College of Charleston. Butler did not drop a set over the weekend. Beck had just two service errors.

BIG EAST Defensive Player  of the Week
Brittany Witt, Creighton, So., Libero (Omaha, Neb.)

Creighton sophomore libero Brittany Witt averaged 3.80 digs and 0.50 aces per set, earning All-Tournament Team honors as then-No. 9 Creighton won the Kansas Invitational over the weekend with a 2-1 record. Witt had 14 digs and tied her career high with three aces against No. 17 Purdue to open the weekend. Later that day she added eight digs and an ace as CU made quick work of Belmont. Witt’s best match of the weekend came in a win at then-No. 7 Kansas, where she owned 16 digs and an ace while handling the Jayhawks their first home sweep since 2011. Witt had nine scoops and served a pivotal 5-0 run that gave Creighton the lead for good in the first set. Witt led a defensive unit that was aced just once in 10 sets (178 serve receptions) over the weekend, a league-best for the week.

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Mallory Potts, Villanova, Fr., OH (San Antonio, Texas) 

Wildcat freshman outside hitter Mallory Potts led Villanova in kills in all three matches last weekend as VU went 2-1 with straight set wins over Connecticut and Albany and a 3-0 loss to Princeton in the Villanova Classic. Potts was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 4.22 points and 4.00 kills per set behind .289 hitting. Potts’ statline also consisted of 0.22 digs/set and 0.44 blocks/set.

BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Jaali Winters, Creighton, Jr., OH (Ankeny, Iowa)
Winters helped the-No. 9 Creighton to its third consecutive tournament title as the Kansas Invitational MVP. She averaged 4.30 points, 3.60 kills, 2.50 digs with four aces and two double-doubles. She posted 14 kills, 12 digs in the straight set win over then-No. 7 Kansas.

Allie Barber, Marquette, So., OH (Cedarburg, Wis.)
Barber posted 5.07 points, 4.86 kills and 1.0 digs per set in a 1-1 week for Marquette in Golden Eagles Classic. Her hitting percentage of .484 led the league last week. Barber also added three blocks.

Addison Root, Providence, So., OH (Wichita, Kansas)
Friar Classic MVP Root helped lead Providence to another undefeated weekend as she accounted for 4.69 points. 3.82 kills and 3.92 digs per set while hitting .361. Root scored nine aces and had three double-doubles in a 4-0 weekend.

Kayley Wood, St. John’s, Fr., MB/RS (Woodlands, Texas)
Wood earned the MVP of the Cornell Invitational as she averaged 3.33 points, 2.78 kills and 1.00 blocks per set in a 2-1 weekend for St. John’s. Wood also hit .316 and averaged 0.33 digs/set.

Abby Thelen, Seton Hall, Jr., OH (Mitchell, Ky.)
In a 2-2 week for Seton Hall, Thelan posted two double doubles with 15 kills, 11 digs in a 3-2 loss at Princeton and 22 kills, 10 digs at Illinois State. She averaged 4.21 points, 3.76 kills and 1.71 digs per set for the week and earned a spot on the Illinois State Redbird Classic All-Tournament Team.
