Another topsy-turvy week in Division II volleyball led to another massive shakeup in the AVCA Division II Coaches’ poll standings.
Last week’s #1 Concordia – St. Paul, the 2-time NCAA Division II Champions, lost twice, resulting in the loss of all of their first-place votes and a drop to 6th in the new pool.
Two west coast teams, Cal State Bernardino (24 first place votes) and Western Washington (20 first place votes) have stepped into the void. While Western Washington was ranked higher than Cal State Bernardino last week, Cal State Bernardino jumped WW after winning 3-1 against then-#9 Cal State LA. Cal State Bernardino previously spent 2 weeks at #1 in week 6 and 7 of the poll.
Among top-10 teams, half (#1, #4, #5, #7, #9) from last week’s poll lost.
Other teams receiving 1st-place votes are Nebraska-Kearney, Northern State (2), and Tarleton State. None of those first place votes came from their own teams’ coaches, nor from coaches of teams that played them this season:
- Wick Colchagoff – Northern State
- Matthew Cribbin – Northern State
- Philip Piontek – Tarleton State
- Cade Smith – Nebraska Kearney
Also of note, Wingate, who was the last undefeated team remaining in Division II heading into last week, lost their first match of the season on Friday at unranked Anderson, and yet still made their first appearance in the top 25, checking in at #25.
