2017 FIVB WORLD TOUR – POREC MAJOR
- June 26 to July 2
- Five-Star Event
- Schedule
Canadians Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes had plenty to celebrate on Canada Day as the pair won its first FIVB World Tour event of the season, the Porec Major Five Star tournament.
The win marked the first by a Canadian women’s team at a major event, with the country’s previous three gold medals coming at one (2017 Australia), two (2017 Australia) or three star (2015 China) events. It also improved upon Pavan/Humana-Paredes’s best finish of the season, second place at the Rio Four-Star, May 21. The pair finished fourth at The Hague Three-Star last weekend.
Sixth-seeded Pavan/Humana-Paredes made their way to the final with a straight-set win over No. 7 seed Barbara Seixas and Fernanda Alves from Brazil, 21-16, 21-11. The duo then topped fifth-seeded Barbora Hermannova and Marketa Slukova of the Czech Republic, 32-34, 21-12, 15-6 for the gold medal.

The finale was the second three-setter of the day for Hermannova/Slukova, who defeated Switzerland’s Nina Betschart/Tanja Huberli, 22-20, 12-21, 15-10 in the semifinals.
The ninth-seeded Swiss team earned its first podium finish of the year, grabbing the bronze with a 21-14, 21-19 win over Barbara/Fernanda in the third place match.
