MATCH NOTES

The visiting Oregon State Beavers (RV) defeated the Arizona Wildcats in straight sets to record its first win in Tucson since 1993.

Oregon State was led offensively by junior middle Kory Cheshire, who notched 12 kills. Freshman outside Maddie Goings and senior outside Mary-Kate Marshall added 10 kills each. Defensively, junior middle Maddy Gravley had a team-best five blocks and freshman libero Grace Massey tallied 18 digs.

“This was the most balanced, offensively, in a long time,” head coach Mark Barnard said. “It took us a while to get into a rhythm until we found success running the middle, and that really set up our hitters on the outside late in the match. We weren’t flashy, but we worked hard and fought for everything. That pretty much describes our team all year.”

For the Wildcats, junior outside Kendra Dahlke notched 11 kills, while freshman outside Elizabeth Shelton recorded another 10, hitting at a .412 clip.

In the first set, Oregon State jumped to an early 8-2 and never looked back, eventually winning the frame 25-14 on back-to-back Cheshire kills. Arizona had 10 attack errors in the first set

The second was filled with runs by both sides, with Oregon State using four straight points to reach set point at 24-18. The Wildcats answered with five in a row to close to 24-23 before another Cheshire kill ended the frame 25-23 in Oregon State’s favor.

The Beavers led early and won the third frame 25-18 to secure the sweep.

Next up, Oregon State travels to Tempe for a Saturday match with Arizona State, while the Wildcats host #15 Oregon, also on Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS ARIZONA IN TUCSON

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon State volleyball team swept past Arizona in a three-set sweep. The win is the seventh in the last nine matches for the Beavers. It is the first win for the Beavers in Tucson since 1993.

With the win, Oregon State moves to 18-9 overall and 8-7 in the Pac-12, while Arizona fell to 9-15, 3-12. The Beavers beat the Wildcats by scores of 25-14, 25-23 and 25-18.

The Beavers dominated the first set from the start going up 8-2 as Mary-Kate Marshall recorded a pair of kills and Arizona struggled on the attack. OSU continued to pour it on stretching the lead to 20-10 before finishing off the Wildcats 25-14.

In the second set, Arizona took a quick lead and kept the score close until the Beavers used a 4-0 run to gain the lead at 8-5 and a 3-0 run to expand the lead to 17-12. But the Wildcats weren’t done, running a 4-0 run of their own to pull within 19-17. The set, which was full of runs, continued with the Beavers pulling ahead 24-18. However, the Wildcats fought off five set points before Kory Cheshire put the final ball on the floor to take the set 25-23.

“The team accomplished a major goal tonight in winning their 18th match,” Barnard said. “We’re excited to keep rolling later this weekend.”

After the intermission, OSU used a 4-0 run and a 6-0 run to open a 13-5 lead which the Wildcats would not overcome. The Beavers used another 4-0 near the end of the match to secure the set and match 25-18.

Kory Cheshire led the Beavers with 12 kills while Maddie Goings and Mary-Kate Marshall recorded 10 apiece. Grace Massey led the defense with 18 digs and Maddy Gravley tallied a team-high five blocks.

Game Notes: Thursday’s victory marks the first by the Beavers against Arizona in Tucson since 1993 … Kory Cheshire led OSU with 12 kills … it is only the third time in 27 matches that Mary-Kate Marshall didn’t lead the Beavers in kills.

Unforced Errors Costly in Loss to Oregon State

TUCSON, Ariz. — Oregon State defeated Arizona in three sets on Friday night in McKale Center (25-14, 25-23, 25-18), completing the season sweep of Arizona.

Arizona had 22 attack errors in the match, including 10 in the first set, as the Beavers held UA to just a .156 hitting percentage in the three-set match.

“Well the first set was certainly just a fountain of errors for us,” said head coach Dave Rubio. “We had 18 unforced errors. You’re not going to win against anybody, I don’t care if it’s a junior high team. If you’re going to give them an 18-point lead, the chances are they’re still going to beat you. So we need to just focus on executing better.”

The Cats out-dug the visiting Beavers 48-41, led by Makenna Martin’s 16.

Kendra Dahlke led the Wildcats with 11 kills while Elizabeth Shelton finished with 10 on just 17 swings (.412).

The Wildcats had 10 attack errors in the first set, helping Oregon State cruise to a 25-14 victory in the opener.

In a much more closely contested second set, the Wildcats, who were down 24-18, fought off five set points to get within 24-23, but the Beavers ended the 5-0 run to win the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Oregon State took hold of the third set early and cruised to a 25-18 victory to sweep the match.
