USAV Collegiate Beach Championships

The USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships are underway. The 24 women’s teams have been divided into six pools, A through F. The top two teams in each pool advance as well as the highest four of the third-place pool finishers, based on their point ratios.

On Day 1 of the competition, Pool A completed its first four matches and USC’s Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes are atop the group with a pair of wins. The duo defeated UCLA’s Kamila Tan and Jordan Anderson and Cal Poly’s Hannah Hubbard and Emily Sonny in straight sets.

In the other two matches, Tan/Anderson defeated St. Mary’s Lindsey Knudsen and Payton Rund 22-20, 12-21, 15-13; and Knudsen and Rund in turn downed Hubbard and Sonny in straight sets.

Remaining on the Pool A slate for Friday are matches between Tan/Anderson and Hubbard/Sonny and the premier matchup of the group, pitting Claes/Hughes against the lone team to beat them in 2017, Knudsen/Rund. Knudsen and Rund snapped USC’s top pair’s 103-match win streak with a 13-21, 21-18, 17-15 decision on April 9.
