Colorado State Upsets No. 16 Florida State via Sweep

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Colorado State (RV) used an efficient offense to hand No. 16 Florida State (AVCA 15) its first home loss of the season via sweep. The Rams hit at a .379 clip, including an eye-popping .654 effort in the final set.

In addition to outhitting the Seminoles .379 to .212, CSU outdid FSU on the block (8-6), from the service line (6-1) and in the backcourt (42-32 in digs).

Redshirt freshman outside hitter Breana Runnels and senior outside Jasmine Hanna paced the Rams with 15 kills apiece, each hitting better than .450 in the match. Sophomore middle blocker Paulina Hougaard-Jensen chipped in six kills to go with a team-leading four blocks. Senior outside Sanja Cizmic added five kills, three blocks and a team-best two aces. Sophomore libero Amanda Young led the backcourt defense with 14 digs.

Senior outside Milica Kubura was the top scorer for Florida State, posting 14 kills and hitting at a .455 clip. Redshirt junior outside Christina Ambrose and senior outside Natasha Calkins chipped in nine putaways apiece. Freshman middle Deja Williams put up a team-best four blocks, while Ambrose added three. Sophomore outside Bozena Culo managed seven digs to lead the FSU backcourt.

Ambrose and Williams teamed up on three straight blocks to give FSU the first three points of the match, but CSU responded with four straight points, including two Runnels putaways and an Cizmic ace. The Seminoles pushed ahead by three at 9-6, including two Ambrose putaways. Momentum swung back the other way as the Rams responded with an 11-5 run to go up 17-14. Hillyer and Runnels chipped in two kills apiece, while FSU gave up four points on errors. Colorado State pushed the advantage to five at 22-17 and waded through a 3-0 Seminole run before closing out the 25-21 win on a Hillyer kill.

Florida State shook off the loss and kicked off Set 2 with a 5-0 run, incluidng kills by Williams, Ambrose and Kubura. The Seminoles maintained the five-point edge at 12-7, but could not hold off the Rams any longer. Colorado State erased the deficit and went up 17-16 with a 10-4 run. Hanna and Runnels each turned in three kills and a block to give CSU the edge. The lead changed hands four more times before the end of the set. After a tie at 22, Colorado State took the lead for good with an FSU service error and a Hanna kill. Another Hanna putaway sewed up the win.

Colorado State jumped out to an 8-2 lead in Set 3 as Hanna posted three straight kills. Florida State would get no closer than five the rest of the match. Kills by Hanna and Ellie Gubser and an ace by Hougaard-Jensen pushed the edge to eight at 18-10. A service error at 21-14 slowed the Rams momentarily, but the team finished the match on a 4-1 run, scoring the final point on a McKenna Thornlow ace.
