The Peruvian Volleyball Federation (FPV) has recently announced Cuban Carlos Gala as the new head-coach of its male national team. Gala is already a household name in Peruvian volleyball, as he is the current coach of the leading club in the country’s Women’s Superior League (LNSV), Jaamsa Volleyball. Here is how Gala reacted to the news:

“I appreciate the confidence that the Peruvian Volleyball Federation has placed in me to develop men’s volleyball in the country. We want to have in three years time a competitive team, one which won’t merely participate in tournaments, but contend for titles. We want to develop a team that is well prepared tactically and physically. I have a long experience with men’s volleyball. In Cuba I had the opportunity to work with youth and senior national teams.

We have to do a great job. First we need organize ourselves, think about the youth categories and seek to motivate male volleyball in schools so that young people will be interested in the sport. We lack veteran players, so we will have to compete with young people. For that reason we have to analyze what events we will participate in to train our boys. Only in three years time we should aim to contend in higher age categories.”

FPV’s president, Pilar Gonzalez, is very confident in Gala’s work and has set out what he believes to be the top priorities of the team’s new head-coach:

“For us it is a priority to rescue and develop men’s volleyball (Note: Peru’s men’ s national team is not ranked in FIVB’s senior rankings), we know about Professor Gala’s volleyball experience and we trust in his commitment and professionalism and that he will help us to develop the talent of all our young people who know how to play and defend Peru’s jersey with courage.”

Gala’s first challenge at the head of the new team will be the XI Odesur South American Games scheduled from May 21 to June 1 in Cochabamba, Bolivia. He then will shift his focus to Peruvia’s youth teams during the U21 South American Men’s Championship in Santiago, from August 27 to September 2, and the U19 South American Men’s Championship, from September 22 to 29 in Cali, Colombia.
