Defense Leads Texas to 4 Set Win Over San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif.Texas volleyball, ranked 4th, recorded 51 digs and 13 blocks in a four set win over #23 San Diego on Saturday night in the last match of the USD Tournament.

San Diego started strong, jumping to a 13-5 lead and claiming set 1 of the match 25-20. Texas responded by winning the next 3 sets. Set two was a battle until Texas took the lead at 12-11 before jumping ahead on a 13-8 run. The next set was a blowout, with the Longhorns holding the Toreros to just 10 points, and were hitting .400 by the end of the third. Chiaka Ogbogu‘s 10th kill of the night did it for Texas in set four, with a final score of 25-16. Texas played clean volleyball with just 7 errors over the 4 sets, while USD recorded 30.

Longhorn freshman outside hitter Lexi Sun had a career night with 16 kills and just two errors, hitting .452, which was enough to name her MVP of the tournament. Micaya White finished with 13 kills and a .382 clip for the Longhorns. Jayden Kennedy and Roxie Wiblin tabbed 12 kills a piece for the Toreros.

Defensively, Sophomore Autumn Rounsaville and senior libero Cat McCoy fueled the Longhorns defense with double-digit dig performances at 14 and 13, respectively. San Diego’s senior libero, Lizzy Tardieu, led the Toreros in digs with 13. Morgan Johnson was responsible for 8 of the Longhorns’ 13 blocks, with a career-high three solo blocks.

The Longhorns had three others joining Sun on the all-tournament team: Chiaka Ogbogu, Ashley Shook, and Micaya White. San Diego tabbed three spots on the team with Kaity Edwards, Kristen Gengenbacher, and Jayden Kennedy.

San Diego, Calif – Junior Morgan Johnson led No. 4 Texas Volleyball with eight blocks to lead No. 4 Texas past No. 17 San Diego, 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-16) in the final match of the USD Tournament on Saturday evening.

Johnson’s eight blocks consisted of five block assists and a career-high three solo blocks to lead the Longhorns’ defense to a 13-1 block advantage over the Torreros.

Freshman Lexi Sun and sophomore Micaya White led the offensive charge for Texas, combining for 29 of the team’s 52 kills. Sun had a career match, posting 16 kills and two errors on 31 swings for a .452 hitting percentage, while White finished with 13 kills with no errors on 32 swings for a .382 clip.

Senior Chiaka Ogbogu also posted double-digit kills with 10, hitting .350, while junior Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani led the Longhorns in hitting percentage, posting six kills on 13 swings with no errors, hitting .462.

Sophomore Autumn Rounsaville and senior libero Cat McCoy led the Longhorns with double-digits digs, recording 14 and 13 digs, respectively. Freshman setter Ashley Shook posted nine digs to go along with her 39 assists.

As a team, Texas hit .399 in all three matches of the USD Tournament and held its opponents to .030, and oublocked all three opponents, 42-5.

Sun was named Most Valuable Player of the weekend, while Ogbogu, Shook, and White joined USD’s Kaity Edwards, Kristen Gengenbacher, and Jayden Kennedy on the All-Tournament team.

The matchup between the USD Tournament’s two undefeated teams began with a fast start from the Toreros, giving the home team a 10-5 lead. Though Texas cut the deficit to as little as four points following a timeout at 13-5, San Diego maintained their lead through to a final set score of 25-20.

With the teams trading points through a keenly contested beginning to the second set, Sun blasted a kill to give the Longhorns a lead at 12-11. A block from Johnson on the subsequent point extended that lead, springing a 13-8 run for Texas to take the set second, 25-19.

After tying the match score up at one set apiece, the Longhorns pressed on to take a 10-5 lead to start the third frame. With White breaking the double-digit kill mark on the match, Texas rose to a .400 hitting percentage and nine team blocks for the set, surging to take the set, 25-10.

Paced by Johnson at the net and opposite hitters White and Sun on the outside, Texas had earned a 17-10 lead before San Diego took a timeout to pause the fourth set. With the Longhorns pushing on to match point at 24-15, San Diego pulled one point back before Ogbogu’s tenth kill secured victory.

The Horns will open their home season at Gregory Gym on Thursday, Sept. 7 with Denver and Texas A&M Corpus Christi before hosting No. 2 Minnesota on Friday, Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. All matches will be televised on Longhorn Network.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The No. 17 USD Volleyball team (4-2) fell to No. 4 Texas 3-1 in front of a record-breaking crowd at the Jenny Craig Pavilion Saturday evening. The Toreros won the first set 25-20, but the Longhorns responded to win the next three 19-25, 10-25, 16-25.

Jayden Kennedy and Roxie Wiblin each had 12 kills with Wiblin adding eight digs as well. Kristen Gengenbacher notched her first double-double of the year, finishing with 37 assists and 12 digs. Lizzy Tardieu had a team-high 13 digs.

With a record-breaking attendance of 4,222 the JCP was rocking, especially after the Toreros started the match on a 5-0 run. They would never trail in the first set and led by as many as eight points (13-5).

The second set was tightly-contested throughout and was tied at 11-11. Texas then went on a 4-0 run and never trailed again. The Longhorns continued to apply the pressure in the third set on their way to a 25-10 win, the lowest point total in a set this year for USD.

San Diego native Lexi Sun led the Longhorns with 16 kills. Ashley Shook had 39 assists and Autumn Rounsaville (14) and Cat McCoy (13) each had double-digit digs.

The Toreros have one more non-conference tournament next weekend. They will play Utah, Missouri and Green Bay in Salt Lake City.
