DELA Beach Open Down to Top Eight Women

DELA BEACH OPEN

Morning action at the DELA Beach Open saw the women’s field cut from 16 to eight during the second elimination round.

Teams advancing to the third round were: Brazilians Maria Antonelli/Carol Salgado and Barbara/Fernanda, Germany’s Sandra Ittlinger and Kim Behrens, Swiss duo Nina Betschart/Tanja Huberli, Czech pairs Kristyna Kolocova/Michala Kvapilova and Barbora Hermannova/Marketa Slukova, Finland’s Riikka Lehtonen/Niina Ahtianinen, and Americans Alix Klineman and April Ross.

All eight matches were finished in straight sets. The closest match of the round came as Barbara/Fernanda edged past Americans Kelly Claes/Sara Hughes 22-20, 21-19.

Four other matches feature one set won by the minimum two-point spread.

The women’s semifinals begin at 2 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. ET Saturday. The bronze medal match is slated for 4:15 a.m. Sunday with the gold medal match to follow at 5:30 a.m. All four matches are slated to be streamed live on the FIVB YouTube channel.
