Italy’s Massa Pallavolo is having a brutal A2 campaign this year, having amassed a 4-22 record which places it in last place in the competition’s standings. To make matters even worse, the team has lost Giacomo Leoni, Simone Calarco, and and Dmytro Dolgopolov to injuries/illness. Of these, Dolgopolov’s case warrants the most attention. Having arrived in the team only a week earlier, he made his debut, and suddenly went down with a case of Hepatitis A. According to the team’s official website, there is not timetable for his recovery.

The 24-year-old setter Dolgopolov arrived in Massa after a very brief stint in the Polish PlusLiga with Radom, who filled in for setter Dejan Vincitz while he was injured. Prior to this, Dolgopolov played for Estonia’s Selver Tallin, Finland’s Hurrikkani Loima, Kazakhstan’s KazHrom TNK, and Ukraine’s Lokomotiv Kharkov and Luchesk Lutsk.

Hepatitis A is a viral liver disease that can cause mild to severe illness. The hepatitis A virus (HAV) is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water or through direct contact with an infectious person. Almost everyone recovers fully from hepatitis A with a lifelong immunity. However, a very small proportion of people infected with hepatitis A could die from fulminant hepatitis. The risk of hepatitis A infection is associated with a lack of safe water, and poor sanitation and hygiene (such as dirty hands). Safe water supply, food safety, improved sanitation, hand washing and the hepatitis A vaccine are the most effective ways to combat the disease.

VolleyMob wishes Dolgopolov a speedy recovery.
