Dominican Republic Sits Atop Pool B; Poland Squeaks Past China

Dominican Republic def. Peru 3-0 (25-20,  25-8, 25-19)

Poland def. China 3-2 (16-25, 26-24, 15-25, 25-15, 15-12)

 

The Dominican Republic dominated Peru in a quick three-set affair to remain atop Pool B, while Poland edged China in five sets despite being outscored by four points in the match.

The Dominican Republic racked up 16 blocks in a three-set match that took just an hour and nine minutes. The Dominicans also had help from 22 Peruvian miscues in the contest.

The DR won the offensive battle 35-30 in kills, the block 16-4 and tied in aces with two apiece. The Dominicans limited their errors to just 11 in the match.

Vielka Michelle Peralta Luna recorded a match-high 19 points, including 15 kills, three blocks and an ace. Madeline Jazmin Guillen Paredes chipped in 12 points, with 10 kills and two blocks. Six different players registered a block in the match, including four each by Yanlis Liliannis Feliz Sena and Geraldine Stefany Gonzalez.

Leslie Leyva paced Peru with 10 points, including eight kills, while Kiara Montes (8) and Maricarmen Guerrero (7) followed. Montes put up a team-best two blocks, while Guerrero added seven kills.

 

Poland 3, China 2

China actually outscored Poland 101-97 in a five-set loss due to a lopsided 25-16 first set. The teams were fairly even the rest of the way, with two sets decided by two or three points.

Poland came back from the 2-1 deficit in the match to steal away the win.

China posted 48 kills, 16 blocks and four aces, while Poland countered with 47 kills, 11 blocks and nine aces.

Natalia Murek scored a match-high 24 points, with 20 kills, two blocks and two aces. Zuzanna Gorecka chipped in 11 points, while Maryna Lukasik added 10. Lukasik served up three of the team’s nine aces, while Murek and Gorecka each registered two perfect serves.

Hanyu Yang led China with 22 points, including a team-best 14 kills and seven blocks. Xiaoqing Cai added 14 points, while Han Wu (13) and Yuqian Zhang (11) followed. Cai recorded 13 kills and Wu added 12, while Zhang managed six kills, four blocks and an ace.
