Former Appalachian State setter Amanda Krahl is headed to the Mid-American Conference as a transfer to Northern Illinois. A sophomore this past season, Krahl will become a junior in the fall of 2018 for Northern Illinois.

In her first year with the Mountaineers, Krahl appeared in 62 sets and logged 489 assists (7.89 per set), 103 digs (1.66 per set), 21 kills, 16 blocks and 10 aces. However, her time was cut down as a sophomore in 2017 when she saw action in just 12 sets, recording 65 assists (5.42 per set), 24 digs (2.0 per set), nine kills, three blocks and one ace.

A 5’9″ native of Pearland, Texas, Krahl came to Appalachian State from St. Agnes Academy where she was all-state and district MVP in 2014-15. She also played with Absolute Volleyball Academy, who won the USAV Junior National Championship 17-Open division in her final year.

“The first noticeable trait about Amanda is that she is a competitor and she will bring that energy to our gym,” Northern Illinois head coach Ray Gooden said in the team’s release of the addition. “She comes to us with collegiate experience, and that will also help our group continue to move forward. Amanda is solid with her setting fundamentals and is a positive addition to our program.”

Appalachian State, who went 12-20 in 2017, is now left with one setter on their 2018 roster at the moment in Becky Porter, who transfers into the program from NC State. That move may have been the last straw for Krahl.

For her new school, Northern Illinois, Krahl will look to help the team look more like the 25-win NCAA Tournament team from 2016 as opposed to the eight-win output from 2017. They had two setters on last year’s roster, including assist-leader Chandler Kinley who graduates. That leaves an opening for Krahl and the other returner – Samantha Boever – to compete for playing time at the position.
