Former Long Beach State right side Ashley Anselmo is transferring out of the program to attend New Mexico State in 2018. A redshirt sophomore-to-be in the fall, Anselmo will have three years left of play.

The move has yet to be officially announced by New Mexico State, but Anselmo took to social media to say she is ‘going to miss my girls next year @ Walter Pyramid LBSU’ and now has NMSU Volleyball listed in her twitter bio. Although things haven’t been finalized, it would be likely that Anselmo is immediately eligible since she is changing leagues.

A 6’2″ opposite, Anselmo came to Long Beach State out of Mira Costa High School where she was first-team All-Bay League in her two years of varsity as an upperclassmen. According to her profile with LBSU, she was also originally recruited by UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis and Harvard.

With the 49ers, she appeared in just two sets as a true freshman in 2016 but suffered an injury on her first kill that caused her to redshirt. Then in 2017, Anselmo appeared in three matches and seven sets, logging 8 digs, 5 blocks, 2 kills and an ace.

The loss represents the third via transfer for Long Beach State, who went 10-19 last season. They also have seen setter Mary Jo McBride to Portland State and middle blocker Ashley Murray to Florida State.

Her new team, New Mexico State, went 21-8 in 2017 including a 12-2 mark as a member of the WAC before they were upended in the conference tournament semifinals. They had no opposites on their 2017 roster, so Anselmo should compete for playing time right away.
