After leaving Turkey’s Halkbank, Turkish national teamer Yeliz Basa has found herself a new home. It has been announced Voleybolextra.com that she has signed a contract with Indonesia’s Petrokimia.
Basa started playing volleyball at 14 years of age in Besiktas’ youth squad. She then spent her first six professional seasons with the team, which netted her her fist call up for Turkey’s national squad. Her good domestic performance caught the attention of Japan’s powerhouse NEC Red Rockets, which made her the first Turkish player to ever be signed by a Japanese team. Basa led Red Rockets’ squad to a V-League title with an astonishing 23-5 record. She then went on to win a gold medal with Turkey’s national team at the CEV 2014 European League.
Upon establishing herself as an international-caliber player, her performance motivated another foreign club, this time South Korea’s Hyundai Hillstate, to sign her, thus also making her the first Turkish player to sign with a team in South Korea.
Now, the 30-year-old 6’3″ tall opposite hitter will make the move from her home-country of Turkey to Indonesia for the first time in her career. As a testament for her nomad career, she will now also hold the distinction of being the first ever Turkish player to play for an Indonesian team.
