In this video from the FIVB head coach of the United States women’s national volleyball team Karch Kiraly answers plenty of questions regarding his thoughts on the sport and training.

Kiraly is a coach on the national team but also has experience playing for the United States national team. He won three gold medals spanning three Olympic Games from 1984-1992.

Advice for parents and young players on keeping motivation:

Coach Kiraly’s advice revolved around keeping things fun for young kids and involving themselves in the sport passionately. He advised that if it’s not something that’s fun for them, it might be time to find something else to do.

Biggest challenges of coaching:

The toughest part is pushing everyone involved in the organization, be it players or others, to be the best version of themselves. He also has to be a great teacher which can be challenging at times.

Advice he would give his younger self:

Kiraly said that he would have devoted more time to developing his mental strength and a more well defined purpose in each training session. He would have recommended more time spent on mental training, such as controlling his thoughts.

Keeping calm during tense situations:

Recognizing that he has to be his best for other people during tense situations allows Kiraly to keep calm. He wants to infect other people with a calm and poised demeanor.
