Four Three-Setters Highlight Nantong Open Round of 16

2017 FIVB World Tour – Nantong

Of the eight teams who advanced through the Round of 24, only Russians Yulia Abalakina/Ksenia Dabizha and Chinese pair Shuhui Wen/Xinyi Xia managed to win their second match of the tournament at the Nantong Open.

Abalakina/Dabizha defeated Vanuatu’s Loti Joe/Linline Matauatu 22-20, 21-11, while Wen/Xia topped Czech duo Magdalena Dostalova/Karolina Rehackova 21-16, 21-13..

The other six teams that came through the opening round lost in the Round of 16.

Excitement came in the form of four three-set affairs.

Thailand’s Varapatsorn Radarong/Tanarattha Udomchavee won the most hotly contested match of the round, 19-21, 26-24, 20-18 over China’s Chen Chunxia/ Zhaochen Wei.

China’s Xinxin Wang/Chen Xue won 21-12, 15-21, 15-10 over England’s Victoria Palmer/Jessica Grimson. Americans Irene Pollock/Amanda Dowdy were victims of a three-set loss, falling to Canadians Megan Nagy/Marie-Christine LaPointe 21-18, 10-21, 15-11.

Japan’s Megumi Murakami/Miki Ishii also won in three sets, rallying after dropping the opening stanza.

Brazil’s Juliana/Carol Horta, which won their first FIVB gold of 2017 at the Monaco One-Star event last week, also advanced to the quarterfinals.

Wen/Xia finished second to Americans Kelly Larsen and Betsi Flint at the Tangshan Open Two Star.
