The Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV) has announced in its official website that it has organized 4 friendlies in Brazilian soil between Brazil and Team USA as preparation for the FIVB Women’s World Championship. The games will be played from August 12 – 18 in three different cities: Brasília, Uberaba, and Rio de Janeiro.
While Team USA is coming out of a gold VNL run, Brazil greatly underachieved at the tournament, finishing in 4th place. Although the VNL is a new tournament, one could suggest that as it is replacing the FIVB Grand Prix, Brazil was the defending champions, which makes its absence from the podium even more appalling.
It’s common during these preparatory friendlies for teams to look for weaker adversaries that did not qualify for the World Championships to play against. Regardless, the choice of adversaries here is perfect for both teams. Brazil desperately needs to get back to its groove, and going against a tough, title favorite opponent is best when it comes to raising team morale. On Team USA’s side of the deal, although the team is riding a better wave than their rivals, Brazil is still a strong enough team to motivate the players to reach for their best performance.
