Ever since Soviet times, Russia organizes its athletes’ merits into a sport classification ranking system. The highest honor of the casting is the title of “Merited Master of Sport,” (MMS) given only to World or Olympic champions. That is, until president Vladimir Putin decided to honor to a few players present in Russia’s quarterfinal finish at this year’s Soccer World Cup, played in Russian soil. Needless to say, some athletes who had to work the hard way to deserve the title were livid, among them volleyball legend Ekaterina Gamova, who took to her personal Instagram page to vent off her frustration:
“I assumed that it would be so, unfortunately. Our country has a strange attitude towards the achievements of athletes. To win the title of MMS you have to be an Olympic or World Champion, and these players received the title after an exit in the quarter finals! I’m sorry that the MMS title is depreciating in value. For our gold World Championship title in 2010, not all players of our team received the MMS award, because they substitute players. But we’re a team. I received my title after the Games in Sydney-2000, not being in the starting six. This is not a complaint for the soccer players themselves, it’s a big question for the leaders of Russian sports.”
Gamova, of course, faced a lot of backlash from soccer fans. Olympic champion volleyballer Dmitry Musersky came to rescue on his personal Instagram page as well:
“I support Gamova completely! I’m surprised when reading the comments, how people pour mud at an athlete who has invested so much in the development of sport in her country! Gamova diid not deserve this. Her post is not about comparing volleyball to soccer, but to question the criteria used when gifting the soccer players with an award that is meant to Olympic and World Champions, not quarterfinalists. The players themselves have nothing to do with it, they played very well. But that is not what we are talking about. Everything has its price and measure! Yes, this prize does not really give any privileges for life, but this is the highest award in Russian Sport and I’m sure every athlete in Russia dreams of getting it! And the highest award can not go for 8th place fisishers. The MHS prize has lost its valeu to me.”
