Gdasnk Opens With a Win in Poland; ZAKSA Still Unbeaten

Trefl Gdańsk got the weekend off due to a power outage last weekend in Szczecin. They opened up their season in a 5-set affair with GKS Gatowice. Maciej Muzaj put the team on his shoulders and led his squad to victory with 38 points. He hit .426 (57%) with 35 kills. The opposite also added 2 blocks and 1 ace. Nikola Mijailovic contributed 11 points on 10 kills and an ace. Even though the match went 5 sets, they were the only players for Gdańsk to reach double digits.

Karol Butryn led Katowice with 27 points on 21 kills, 1 ace, and a match-high 5 blocks. Tomas Rousseaux scored 14 points form thte outside with 11 kills. Dominick Depowski chipped in 12 points from the other outside hitter position on 9 kills and 3 blocks. Emanuel Kohut produced 7 points i the middle on 5 kills and 2 blocks. Kohut hit .500 (50%) without committing an error in attack.

ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle Def. Stocznia Szczecin 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-21)

Almost 5,000 fans showed up in Szczecin to usher in a new era of volleyball, but they were met by a stout ZAKSA squad that is used to success. It was a varied and balanced attack from Ben Toniutti, the setter at ZAKSA. He got double-digit production from 4 of the 5 attacking players in the lineup and set his team to a .377 (49%) hitting percentage. Mateusz Bienek was the only player not to score at least 10 points, and the staring middle blocker finished with 9.

Sam Deroo, Belgian outside hitter, scored 10 points on 7 kills and 3 blocks. Deroo was not very efficient in attack with an .080 (28%) hitting percentage and 5 errors. Lukasz Kaczmarek scored 13 points at opposite from 12 kills and an ace. The other middle blocker, Lukasz Wisniewski also finished with 13 points on 10 kills and 3 aces. His 10 kills came without an error and a .714 (71%) hitting percentage. Aleksander Sliwka, former outside hitter at Resovia, put away 2 service aces to go with 9 kills and 1 ace.

Szczecin got most of their production by the FIVB World Championships MVP, Bartosz Kurek. The starting opposite for Szczecin scored 21 points on 18 kills, 1 block, and 2 aces. Matey Kaziskiy was the only other player for Szczecin to break into the double digits with 13 points on 11 kills and 2 blocks.

Chemik Bydgoszcz Def. Cuprum Lubin 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 16-25, 25-22)

Bartosz Filipiak led the way for Bydgoszcz to the tune of 20 points in their 4-set victory over Cuprum Lubin. His points came on 17 kills, 2 blocks, and 1 ace. Nikola Kovacevic scored 15 points on the outside with 12 kills and 3 blocks. Michal Szalacha contributed 12 points as a middle blocker. He put up a match-high 4 blocks to go with 7 kills and a service ace.

Igor Grobelny was the only player for Cuprum Lubin to resigter double-digit points in a 21-point performance. The outside hitter finished with 18 kills, 2 blocks, and scored a point from the service line. Przemyslaw Smolinski and Jakub Ziobrowski both produced 9 points in the defeat.

Jastrzębski Węgiel Def. Aluron Virtu Warta Zawiercie 3-2 (25-20, 21-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-13)

Mark Lebedew had a chance to move Aluron Virtu Warta Zawiercie to 2-0 with a win over his former employer. While they earned more points than Jastrzębski Węgiel, they also committed 9 more errors in attack (27 to 18) and dropped a close one in the tie-break. Mateusz Malinowski led Zawiercie with 24 points on 19 kills, 2 blocks and 3 aces. Marcin Walinski also chipped in 21 points from 17 kills and 4 blocks.

Gregorz Kosok led the match with 7 blocks in the middle for Jastrzębski Węgiel. He also put away 4 kills on 9 attempts with no attack errors. Julien Lyneel led his team with 16 points from 14 kills and 2 blocks. Piotr Hain finished the match with 15 points on 9 kills, 4 blocks, and 2 aces. Dawid Konarski contributed 12 points at opposite.

Cerrad Czarni Radom Def. Indykpol AZS Olsztyn 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-17)

Cerrad Czarni Radom pulled off their first win of the season with 16 points from Wojciech Zalinski, 13 from Maksim Zhigalov, and a match-high 4 bloccks from Norbert Huber. Those 4 blocks accompanied 8 kills, and 1 ace.

Indykpol AZS Olsztyn stayed win-less, though Jan Hadrava put 10 kills on his way to 11 points. His 10 kills also came with 9 attack errors. Marcel Lux scored 10 points despite coming off the bench and only starting the 3rd set.
