Gonzalo Quiroga Signs with GKS Katowice

Gonzalo Quiroga has found a new home for the club season as he has signed on with GKS Katowice in the Polish League. The Argentine wing spiker spent last season playing professionally in his home country in San Juan, Argentina. However, he is no stranger to Europe after spending parts of three years playing in Italy for Kioene Padova to mixed results. In year one he was one of the team’s top scorers accumulating 284 points in 24 matches. But in year two his production dropped to just 161 total points scored in 28 matches.

The 24-year-old Quiroga, the son of former Argentine great Raul Quiroga, played collegiately at UCLA and displayed one of the most dangerous serves of the rally scoring era. He accumulated a school record 194 career service aces as a Bruin, nearly twice as many as the next highest server. He spent this summer getting his first extended action with the national team of Argentina at the FIVB World League. He finished the tournament with 45 total points as the team finished preliminary round play in 10th place and failed to qualify for the final round.

Bringing in Quiroga will bring depth and experience to a team fighting to compete in a tough Polish League. GKS Katowice, under first year coach Piotr Gruszka, recently qualified for the PlusLiga, the highest league in Poland, but struggled in their initial season finishing in 10th place out of 16 teams. A corresponding roster move for his signing has not been announced.
