The Premier Volleyball League calls the one-year suspension of Gretchel Soltones from the Philippine Superliga absurd and uncalled for. According to Sports Vision, who organizes the PVL, Soltones is not under contract with the PSL, as she is on loan to Iriga City team.

“The suspension and hefty fine on (Gretchel) Soltones by the PSL officials is absurd and totally uncalled for,” Sports Vision president Ricky Palou said in a statement.

Soltones participated in a one-day PVL All-Star Game on October 29 that is a charity event that raises money for the HERO Foundation, an organization that raises scholarship funds for children of soldiers who gave up their lives in the line of duty. The participation by Soltones in the event was seen as her participating in the PVL and broke the PSL’s “One League Policy” that does not allow players in the PSL to play for another league. All team owners aside from the University of Santo Tomas and Iriga City were allowed to meet in an emergency meeting about the matter, with all seven owners voting for the punishment on Soltones.

According to the PVL, the All-Star match was played before Soltones was on loan to play with Iriga City. Additionally, Soltones had not yet signed a contract with the PSL, which makes players sign a one-year deal with the league.

“In the first place, Soltones has no contract with the PSL. She is only on loan as her mother league is still the PVL,” said Palou.
