The historic first day of beach volleyball action at the Commonwealth Games included nine matches, four women’s and five men’s in the pool play round.
Just two of the contests went the distance, both on the men’s side. New Zealand’s Sam O’Dea and Ben O’Dea overcame a first-set loss to Dimitris Apostolou/Georglos Chrysotomou (Cyprus) to win 16-21, 21-19, 15-11. Ben put up five blocks to lead the team to victory.
Scotland’s Robin Miedzybrodzkl and Seain Cook outlasted Asanka Pradeep/Sashimal Yapa (Sri Lanka) 21-15, 18-21, 16-14. Cook served up our aces to aid the Scots.
In women’s action, home-standing Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy won in straight sets, racking up six aces, five by Clancy.
Canadian’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan made quick work of their foes in a 34 minute 21-5, 21-8 victory. Pavan notched four aces and five blocks.
Day 2 of play features nine more matches, including New Zealanders Shaunna Polley and Kelsie Wills on the women’s side in Pool C play, and the beginning of the second round of pool play.
