South Carolina volunteer assistant Julian Welsh-White will round out the Howard University coaching staff as the second assistant, head coach Shaun Kupferberg announced on Thursday.

“Julian is an experienced player and coach that will help us take the next step in our development,” Kupferberg said. “He has a history of being involved with successful programs and knows how to get the most out of his teams.”

Welsh-White, who played collegiately at Ball State and Springfield College, was an AVCA second team All-American and ECAC second team all-region honoree in 2016 after playing in 31 matches for Springfield, hitting .465 with 145 kills (1.37 per set) and 115 blocks (1.08 per set).

Welsh-White got his start in coaching as a volunteer assistant JV coach at Cowan High School (2012-14), helping the team to it first state championship appearance. He then was a volunteer assistant at his alma mater Springfield for a year, before joining the South Carolina staff for the 2017 season.

“I am eager and honored to get the opportunity to work alongside Shaun [Kupferberg] and Ciara [Jones] in continuing to help the Howard program grow,” Welsh-White said. “I feel extremely humbled and I am looking forward to growing as an assistant coach. I’m happy to be here and hope to help the team any way I can.”

Jones joined the Howard staff as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator on Feb. 14, after a stint as director of operations at Clemson.

Howard is in its seventh season under Kupferberg. The Bison have made three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including 2017, when the team went 16-16 and won the MEAC Tournament title with three straight sweeps. The Bison played No. 1 Penn State in the NCAA First Round, and managed to take a set off the Nittany Lions, the first set loss in the opening round for PSU in 28 years.
