VolleyMob has already reported the cancellation of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic in Honolulu, affecting Hawaii and Kansas State.
On the big island of Hawaii, St. Cloud State volleyball and three other mainland schools are awaiting their chance to play in the First Hawaiian Bank Volleyball Challenge at the University of Hawaii-Hilo. Hawaii Pacific, UC San Diego, St. Martin’s, Simon Fraser and Chaminade round out the tournament field.
The 14-match tournament has only lost contest due to the weather, a contest originally scheduled for Thursday, during which the Hawaii-Hilo campus was closed due to weather.
Play was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. HT (2 p.m. ET) with six matches each slated for Friday and Saturday and the final match taking place on Sunday.
“I am grateful to the UHH senior administration and their coordinated efforts in allowing this tournament to take place,” Hawaii-Hilo athletic director Patrick Guillen said. “The health and safety of our students and visitors is of upmost importance. I am pleased that everyone is safe and that Hurricane Lane’s toll spared major damage here in Hilo.”
St. Cloud State raised funds over the last few years for a “special trip” to the island. The Huskies arrived in Hawaii last Saturday, toured around and practiced before relocating from Kona to Hilo.
“”In doing so we may have avoided some bad weather because Highway 19 north of us closed because of some washouts overnight,” head coach Chad Braegelmann told KSTP5. “As it started to get a little closer, you start getting a little worried. We certainly don’t have a lot of experience with hurricanes in Minnesota.”
